COSMOSWORKS What's New in COSMOSWorks® 2008?

bodyarrow Focus on Product Design, Not Design Tools

BoltsConnectors

Improved Bolt Connectors: Users can now define bolt connectors for a single bolt or a pattern created using a hole series with a single mouse-click and COSMOSWorks automatically populates all the information needed to define a bolt. User can also define countersink bolts and fasten more than 2 parts using bolt connector.

Include the Mass of Bolt and Pin Connectors: Mass properties of pins and bolts can be included in connector definition. Allows for more realistic representation of the design to accurately calculate natural frequency, buckling and deflection due to self weight.
Design Scenarios: Design scenarios have been enhanced for greater usability providing direct cut and paste access to tabular data from programs like MS Excel and Word. Users can now resize the input window and automatically fill in Parameter values using linear, exponential, or uniform data fills. Coordinate system dependent output has been added to the Results Summary.

Force at Any Location: Point forces can simply be applied at any location using reference points. This eliminates manual work and unnecessary geometry modifications, such as surface splitting.

Rename Existing Studies: Study names can now be changed to better reflect the content of the analysis performed.

Expanded Use of MegaPascal (MPa) Units: Users can now define pressure and material property values in MPa or N/mm^2 in addition to reviewing stresses in this unit.

Gravity Values Set By Default: The appropriate 1G gravity value is automatically set when a gravity load is requested based on the current unit set chosen.

bodyarrow Design with Confidence

TrendStudyGradient

Trend Analysis: Trend Tracker provides data to intuitively evaluate the impact of successive design changes on a base design by allowing users to focus on relative results instead of absolute. The insight provided by this data will allow users to zero in on the best design alternatives in less iteration with more confidence in the value of each feature.

Load/Restraint Advisor: Choosing appropriate loads and restraints may be the most difficult task facing design analysis users at all levels. The Analysis Advisor has condensed the experience of analysis experts into a concise flow chart format to allow designers and novice users to make informed decisions on part interactions. A database of common load and restraint modeling techniques has been added for review allowing customers to capture best practices for their design challenges.

Design Insight Plots: Design Insight plots show the most effective portions of the modeled geometry in carrying the applied load thus allowing users to make informed decisions about feature shape and innovative design alternatives.

Free Body Diagram Plots: Expanding on the popularity of computed free-body forces, COSMOS users can now review the load distribution in their parts and assemblies using intuitive free-body diagrams.

Enhanced Structural Member Analysis: Structural member analysis, introduced in COSMOSWorks 2007, is now enhanced to define extruded, curved, mirrored and patterned structural members as more efficient beam elements. Users can also apply loads on structural member faces or at any reference location.

Shear Force and Bending Moment Plots for Structural Members: Users can now plot shear force and bending moment plots for any structural members defined using beam elements. Users can also list the stress & displacement results for all structural members.
Mixed Mesh with Beam Elements: COSMOSWorks now allows users to define structural members as beams in assemblies with a combination of thick, thin components, structural members and purchased parts.
Improved Mesh Performance: A fast, efficient, curvature based mesher has been added to improve robustness and speed of the meshing process for parts and assemblies with clearances. This mesher can detect small geometry features and automatically mesh with appropriate size elements.
Pressure Vessel Design Study: Pressure vessel design studies help users to combine the effects of multiple independent loading scenarios, such as dead weight, internal pressure, thermal or seismic loading. Users can easily calculate dynamic stresses using SRSS (Square Root of the Sum of the Squares) method.
Stress Linearization of Pressure Vessels: A stress linearization tool makes it easy to calculate the membrane and bending stresses across the wall thickness of a pressure vessel. These values can then be easily compared against ASME pressure vessel code for compliance.
Improved Bonded Contact: The bonded contact has been improved to give better results for models with different mesh densities between bonded faces, especially important when using the h-adaptive method.
Stress vs. Displacement Graphs: COSMOSWorks allows you to plot Stress vs. Displacement response graphs for nonlinear analyses.
Display Hyperelastic Material Constants: COSMOSWorks now displays the Mooney-Rivlin and Ogden constants for hyperelastic materials from Stress-Strain curve input.
Display Elastic and Plastic Strain Components: Relevant strain components including elastic, plastic, thermal and creep quantities are listed any plot.
Easier Shell Definition: SolidWorks File > Print can now print COSMOSWorks results plot if it is active on the screen. Users can also save the results plots as JPEG and TIFF using the SolidWorks command: File > Save As.
Improved Nastran Translator: COSMOSWorks can now write a Nastran input file for models with remote loads, remote mass, connectors, bonded contact, virtual wall and mixed mesh with solids, shells and beams.
NAFEMS Verification Problems in Tutorials: NAFEMS, the international association for the engineering analysis community, has developed a series of benchmarks to verify the quality of analysis results. The results of many of these benchmarks have been included as tutorial problems to allow users to better understand the COSMOS results.
Linear Dynamics - Harmonic Analysis: Simple harmonic loading is characteristic of unbalanced-mass effects in rotating machinery. COSMOSWorks 2008 allows users to conveniently analyze these types of problems in the frequency domain using harmonic analysis.

Linear Dynamics – Time History Analysis: Static studies neglect inertial and damping forces.
With COSMOSWorks 2008 users can determine the dynamic response of a structure under the action of any general time-dependent loads. COSMOSWorks lets you study the time-varying displacements, strains, stresses and forces in a structure as it responds to any combination of static and transient loads.

Linear Dynamics – Random Vibration Analysis: COSMOSWorks 2008 allows users to calculate the response in their components due to nondeterministic loads. Stresses, displacements and reactions of the system are calculated statistically due to the random vibration environment over specified range of frequencies.

Nonlinear Dynamics: COSMOSWorks allows users to analyze systems which have nonlinear material behavior or large deformations in the time domain. If your model is assembled with thin-walled parts prone to large
deformations, has a hyper elastic material model, and is subjected to an impulse load, a nonlinear dynamic study is recommended.
