Smart Manufacturing with SOLIDWORKS MBD and SOLIDWORKS CAM

May 9, 2024

Smart Manufacturing in SOLIDWORKS puts the model at the center of your design and manufacturing process, providing a single source of intelligent information. Here SOLIDWORKS MBD delivers the intelligence, product manufacturing information, responsible for driving smart manufacturing and reducing production bottlenecks

To further aid in the manufacturing process, every SOLIDWORKS subscription user will get access to SOLIDWORKS CAM. Now you have CNC programming, powered by CAMWorks, directly inside SOLIDWORKS. Key capabilities include part and assembly machining, 2.5 axis milling, 2 axis turning, and tolerance-based machining that will eliminate hours of complex programming.

SOLIDWORKS MBD (Model Based Definition), DimXpert dimensions and surface finish annotations can be utilized by designers to attach product and manufacturing information (PMI) such as tolerances, surface finish information, etc. directly to a 3D model. This avoids the time-consuming process involved in having to manually generate 2D drawings that contain this information and can eliminate any potential problems involved in this manual process.

  • Present in 3D with tolerances, model data, surface finish…
  • Customize 3D Output
  • Support Standards, such as Military-Standard-31000A, ASME Y14.5, ASME Y14.41
  • Publish to STEP 242, 3D PDF or eDrawings
  • Share, archive, and reuse intelligent 3D data

Tolerance Based Machining (TBM) can automatically select the correct machining strategy to meet the tolerance and surface finish requirements based on the PMI data attached to the model, further increasing the automation of generating CAM data within SOLIDWORKS CAM and CAMWorks.

  • Read SOLIDWORKS DimXpert Dimensions
  • Read SOLIDWORKS MBD Information
  • Adjust Asymmetric Tolerances to Mean Values
  • Read Surface Finish Annotations
  • Support for GD&T and ISO 286
  • Select Tools, Feeds and Speeds Based on DimXpert and MBD

Benefits of Tolerance Based Machining in CAMWorks

  • Move CNC machining to Industry 4.0 and Smart Manufacturing standards
  • Save time by eliminating manual processes for parts with close tolerances and surface finish requirements
  • Improve quality by utilizing a single source for design and manufacturing
  • Lower costs by moving to paperless machining

Tolerance Based Machining is most effective when combined with other CAM automation tools such as advanced feature recognition and intelligence-based machining. Advanced feature recognition (AFR) recognizes machinable features and adds them to the model so that programmers can utilize the technological advancements of feature-based CAM. Intelligence-based machining with CAMWorks TechDB takes this a step further and captures preferences and best practices to be used in generating the operations and toolpaths for part programs moving forward. This technology is user configurable and allows companies to easily configure the system to fit their specific quality requirements.

With the technologies in HCL CAMWorks – full CAD/CAM integration, feature-based programming, automatic feature recognition, TechDB and Tolerance Based Machining – CNC programs are generated faster, cycle times are reduced, production increased and quality significantly improved.
