What is a Mesh in Abaqus?

  • A mesh in Abaqus is a collection of nodes and elements created by dividing a geometry into smaller parts so that finite element analysis (FEA) can be performed.

Meshing converts a real-world model into a numerical model, allowing engineers to simulate and predict how a product or system behaves under different conditions.

Simulation is method of predict and evaluate the behavior of a product or system virtually. This is done by defining a product or system in detail in a virtual model (geometry, interactions, material behavior, loading/surroundings) and then using science-based mathematics and computing power to predict behavior in the physical world. Simulation helps scientist and engineers gain a deeper understanding of their designs leading to better products.

To perform a finite element Simulation in Abaqus, you must discretize the actual geometry of the structure. The collection of nodes and elements called mesh.

Types of available Mesh types in Abaqus FEA:

Abaqus offers wide range of mesh elements for solving all type of complex problems.

It mainly categorized in to 3D, 2D and 1D elements.

  1. 3D Element Mesh Types:
  • Hex/Brick Element
  • Hex Dominated
  • Tetrahedral
  • Wedge

Hex element meshes are created using Structured or Sweep technique.

  • Structured meshing

Structured meshing provides the greatest level of control because it uses predefined mesh patterns that correspond to specific model topologies. Most solid models that have not been partitioned are too complex to be meshed with these predefined patterns. However, complex geometries can often be divided into simpler regions whose topologies are suitable for structured meshing.

The regions cannot have any holes, isolated edges, isolated faces, or isolated vertices to use the structured meshing technique.

  • Swept meshing

Abaqus creates swept meshes by first generating a mesh on an edge or a face and then sweeping that mesh along a defined path. This process can produce either a two-dimensional mesh from an edge or a three-dimensional mesh from a face. Like structured meshing, swept meshing is restricted to models with particular topologies and geometries.

Below is an example demonstrating how to partition a model to generate a hexahedral element mesh using the structured and sweep techniques.

  1. 2D Element Mesh Types
  • Quad
  • Quad dominated
  •   Triangular

Based on the nature and requirements of the problem, an appropriate mesh type can be selected to achieve accurate simulation results.

In most highly nonlinear structural 3D simulations, hexahedral (hex) elements are generally recommended because they provide superior numerical performance and solution accuracy. Hex elements typically exhibit better convergence characteristics, lower numerical stiffness, and improved stress distribution representation, especially in bending-dominated problems.

For complex models, you need to use the Partition tool to create hex meshes in Abaqus.
