Why Can’t I Rename SOLIDWORKS Files from the FeatureManager Tree

March 24

As a SOLIDWORKS user, you may have encountered a situation where, after installing the 3DEXPERIENCE add-in, you can no longer rename component files directly from the FeatureManager tree. This can be frustrating, especially if you were accustomed to this functionality. In this blog, we’ll explore why this happens and provide a workaround to help you manage your files effectively.

Issue: Renaming Files from the FeatureManager Tree

Before installing the 3DEXPERIENCE add-in, you could easily rename component files directly from the FeatureManager tree by enabling the option “Allow component files to be renamed from FeatureManager tree” in the SOLIDWORKS System Options. However, after installing one of the 3DEXPERIENCE platform apps (such as SOLIDWORKS Add-in or Design with SOLIDWORKS), this option becomes greyed out and inaccessible.

Why Does This Happen?

  • By design, the system removes user access to this SOLIDWORKS option after installing one of the 3DEXPERIENCE platform apps. This is done to ensure that SOLIDWORKS files remain compatible with the 3DEXPERIENCE data model. Modifying component file names is not supported within the 3DEXPERIENCE data model, which is why the option is disabled.

Deactivating the 3DEXPERIENCE add-in from SOLIDWORKS does not restore this functionality. The design is intentional and is part of the integration between SOLIDWORKS and the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.

Workaround: Renaming Files Using SOLIDWORKS File Utilities

To rename your files effectively, you can use SOLIDWORKS File Utilities. This tool is designed to handle renaming SOLIDWORKS reusable data (such as parts, assemblies, and drawings) from outside SOLIDWORKS. It ensures that all references are updated correctly, preventing issues when opening assemblies or drawings.

Steps to Rename Files Using SOLIDWORKS File Utilities:

  1. Locate the File in File Explorer: Right-click the file you want to rename.
  2. Access SOLIDWORKS File Utilities: Under the context menu, select SOLIDWORKS File Utilities > Rename.

What If You Don’t See the SOLIDWORKS File Utilities Option?

SOLIDWORKS File Utilities is installed by default when you install SOLIDWORKS. If you don’t see the options, follow these steps:

  • Check Your Installation Settings: Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features > SOLIDWORKS > Modify/Change and ensure that SOLIDWORKS File Utilities is checked.

Repair SOLIDWORKS File Utilities: If the option is already checked but still missing, refer to the article for further assistance: SOLIDWORKS File Utilities missing
